HISTORIC MAITLAND ARTS CENTER, GARDENS, CHAPEL & TELEPHONE MUSEUM –
WEDNESDAY, SEP. 8, 2021
Founded as an art colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, André Smith (1880-1959.) With over 200 carvings and reliefs, it is an important example of Art Deco Fantasy and Mayan Revival Architecture in the United States, which is one of the main reasons it was named a National Historic Landmark. The Maitland Art Center offers a more immersive and intimate experience than a static museum with it beautiful garden setting and outdoor chapel and encourages visitors to take a closer look at the resident artists and the artistic process. The Telephone Museum takes visitors on a tour of the history of the telephone as well as technology. Try your hand at the working switching station and then take a look at how communications change throughout time. Learn about how in 1920, local resident Carl Galloway decided to improve customer service at his father’s grocery store by installing phones in the homes of his best customers, for them to phone in orders. Maybe you’ll see the one telephone from your childhood!
Lunch is on your own at one of the many fine restaurants and cafes along Picturesque Park Avenue.
